Indianan police arrest nine over major cash van robbery
On Monday, Bengaluru police said two more suspects had been apprehended in addition to seven previously arrested, with authorities recovering 68.5 million rupees of the stolen funds.
"We cannot say how many more will be arrested as we are continuing to investigate the case," Lokesh Jagalasar, Deputy Commissioner of Police for Bengaluru South, told a news agency.
The robbers impersonated officers from the Reserve Bank of India and stopped the cash transport vehicle under the pretext of verifying paperwork for the large sum. The van’s cash custodian and two security guards were then ordered into an SUV, while one gang member took control of the van, police said.
Investigators reported that the gang switched vehicles, used fake license plates, and chose locations with minimal CCTV coverage to move the cash boxes.
A large-scale operation was launched on Wednesday, deploying over 200 officers across Karnataka and neighboring states, including Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Goa.
Those arrested earlier include Gopal Prasad, an employee of the cash transport company CMS; J. Xavier, a former CMS worker; and Annappa Naik, a local police constable.
Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh said detectives are probing CMS’s involvement and possible violations of cash transport guidelines. He noted that “the vans should not follow the same route and timing repeatedly so as to become predictable.”
